National Collection of War Art more detail…

War artists were appointed in both World Wars.Their work was held in a number of different institutions before settling at Archives New Zealand in 1981. During that time dispersal meant some works were damaged, others were lost, and no comprehensive list was ever originally made. The numbering sequence in series 898 is an artificial one, begun by the National Art Gallery in 1952, and continued by the then National Archives (Archives NZ) from 1981 with a Q prefix and continues to be used to this day.

Digital images of this collection can be viewed on the War Art database.

CONTROLLING AGENCY / DEPARTMENT period responsible
AAAC
Department of Internal Affairs, Head Office more detail…

From 1840 until the late nineteenth century, the Colonial Secretary's Office was the hub of the colonial government, with a wide range of responsibilities. As the colonial government grew, these responsibilities were gradually passed on to newly formed departments, until by the early twentieth century the Colonial Secretary's Department, now known as the Department of Internal Affairs, no longer occupied such a central position within government. During its history, the Department has been home to a miscellany of functions, including: supervision of local government; public health; agriculture; naturalisation and citizenship; cultural matters; civil defence; gaming laws ; cinematograph censorship; carriage & storage of dangerous goods; wildlife; distinguished visitors; promotion of national arts; and constitutional matters.

Archives New Zealand occasionally receives random or odd items of uncertain provenance. Once series decisions have been made on such material, the series are listed here as an easy entry point in the GAIMS system. Additionally, in some cases items received under private deposit from individuals may be listed in AAAA instead of registering the depositor as an agency.
