Waimate Magistrate's Court more detail…

The Waimate Magistrate's Court was established in 1865 and closed in 1979. The magistrates' courts, known until 1893 as resident magistrates' courts, constituted the lowest rung on the New Zealand court hierarchy and had a combined civil and criminal jurisdiction. The Court's registrar undertook a number of other government functions, including the registration of births, deaths and marriages.

Timaru Court Office more detail…

A Resident Magistrate's office was established in Timaru by 1857, and by the 1860s a Supreme Court judge was visiting on circuit from Christchurch. A District Court was established in Timaru in 1870 and dealt with matters intemediate between the Magistrate's Court and Supreme Court jurisdictions, until a Supreme Court registry was established in Timaru, circa 1908. The court office was also home to other government functions over the years.
