This series has been used by Archives New Zealand to describe material from the central filing system of the Maori Affairs Department and its predecessors. It contains registered memoranda, 1859-1863; registered correspondence files from an annual single number system, 1863-1892 and 1906-1931; and registered files from a multiple number subject system, 1869-1981.

Records created by a succession of government agencies including the Protector of Aborigines (1840-1846), the Native Secretary and Land Purchase Departments (1846-1861), the Native Department (1861-1893), and the Department of Maori Affairs (1906-1989). These agencies were responsible for administering functions relating to Maori such as land purchase, land administration and development, welfare, education, housing, health and employment. The Department was also responsible for Pacific people from 1968-1985.

- Files relating to adoptions and mental patients are restricted indefinitely. Where the title of the file includes the name of the person concerned, the file description has been removed from the public list.

- 54/ files from the Maori Trustee are restricted for 70 years from date of file closure.

- 30/ and 44/- Housing files are restricted for 70 years from date of file closure.
