The Legislative Department is a state department that grew up around the office of the Clerk of the House. It was the Legislature's secretariat in New Zealand from 1854 to 1985. The function of the Legislative Department has changed over this time, but is to provide specialist advice and assistance on Parliamentary law and procedures to the House of Representatives and its committees, aid the Clerk in noting all the proceedings of the House and recording and colating any items of business transacted by the House.

Prior to 1951, there were two Legislative Departments that served the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council seperately.
