The volumes in this series record plaints filed at the Havelock Magistrate's Court. A plaint is the first document filed in a civil case.
The District Court system was set up to resolve disputes between the state and individuals, through either the criminal justice system or the civil justice system. Blenheim District Court provided these services to the greater Marlborough region.
Picton Magistrate's Court dealt with minor civil and criminal cases in the Picton region. More serious cases were heard by a High Court (earlier known as a Supreme Court).
