The Wanganui District Office of the Social Security Department administered Part II of the Social Security Amendment Act 1938 as it applied to the Wanganui region. This involved co-ordination within the region of the various schemes operated by the former Pensions Department and the former Employment Division of the Labour Department. Responsibilities included administration of local labour schemes, and administration and payment of benefits.

Established when the Social Security Department and Child Welfare Division of the Department of Education (Wanganui offices) merged to provide co-ordinated social services. Functions included responsibility for all payments of Social Security benefits and War Pensions; counselling and advice; care and welfare of young children; guidance and supervision of older 'at risk' children; adoption advice; placement of children in foster families; and the administration of homes and institutions for children.
