GENERAL


The State Hydro-electric Department was responsible for the generation and supply of electricity, including construction of transmission lines and main substations, and for the design and planning of electrical and civil projects. Renamed the New Zealand Electricity Department (NZED) in 1958, the department was also responsible for hydro, geothermal and thermal (oil and coal fired) power stations.
