The Education Department was established with responsibility for funding and auditing local Education Boards; training, examining, and classifying teachers, and determining educational standards. It subsequently acquired responsibility for a range of other educational functions, including national curricula; school publications; library services; Maori, technical, secondary and distance education, and some aspects of tertiary education.
The Education Department also administered a number of educational institutions, including Native or Maori Schools, Industrial and Reformatory Schools and the Sumner Institute for the Deaf and Dumb.
