In May 1841 Willian Hobson, Lietenant-Governor of the Crown Colony of New Zeland, was appointed as Governor of the Colony. Previously the Colony had been subject to the authority of the Governor of New South Wales but this new appointment placed the Colony and its Governor directly under the authority of the Colonial Secretary in London.
The Imperial German Colony of Samoa was established on 1 March 1900 and ended on 29 August 1914 with the occupation of the colony by the Samoan Expeditionary Force of New Zealand. It was responsible for the colonial administration of Samoa on behalf of the Imperial German Government.
