MĀORI HISTORY
The meeting between Māori and Pākehā, and their subsequent interactions, generated a vast number of government records, many of which are held by Archives New Zealand.
The complex relationship between whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy) is the subject of many records, for example, those of the Māori Land Court. You can use Archway to search directly for records by title, or find them by exploring the contextual information about government structures and functions.
Reference guides are being developed on the topics listed below. In the meantime researchers may find the publication He Pūkaki Māori: A Guide to Māori Sources at National Archives, published by National Archives of New Zealand & Te Puni Kōkiri in 1995, helpful.
